Jamie Roberts is delighted to be back in a Cardiff Blues shirt following a five-month injury lay off as he takes his place amongst the replacements in the Welsh side’s European Cup clash this weekend.

Roberts hasn’t featured this season following surgery on a long-standing wrist injury and his last Magners League outing was back in May against Munster.

Ahead of his return the 24-year-old has said he believes the timing of the injury and surgery may not have been all bad with a World Cup looming at the end of the season.

“There was an option to maybe have it after the World Cup but I’m glad my wrist is back stable, because it did trouble me last year,” Roberts told BBC Wales.

“Looking back now I’m glad I had my wrist surgery done now. It is a very long season, I fully appreciate that so hopefully it is a silver lining.

"I've kept myself busy, haven't become over-obsessed with rugby in the time I've been away and just stayed focused, especially in the last three or four weeks before I was going to play again."

The powerful centre picked up the injury after the second British & Irish Lion Test against South Africa in the summer of 2009, but is was not fully diagnosed until the close of last season.

"It takes probably three or four games to get back to full match fitness after being injured. You can do all the work in the gym, on the treadmills, running straight on a track or running on a rugby field doing rugby fitness,” he added.

"But until you play that intensity of a rugby match for a good few weeks, you're not back at match fitness.

"I'm sure if I am involved on Saturday probably after five minutes I'll be blowing.
