Benetton Treviso scrum half Fabio Semenzato has been called up to Italy’s RBS 6 Nations squad as cover for his injured team-mate Edoardo Gori.
Gori was taken off with a shoulder injury in the opening few minutes of Italy’s first game of the championship, which they lost thanks to a Ronan O’Gara drop-goal three minutes from time.
Further examinations have revealed a dislocation and Italy team doctor Roberto Pozzoni has said they will continue to monitor the injury over the coming days to determine whether the 20-year-old requires surgery.
Semenzato receives his call up after impressing the Magners League so far this season and will make the move from the Italy A set-up to the senior squad this week.
"We spoke to Italy A coach Gianluca Guidi and decided to call up Fabio who has been first choice [for the A team] and played well against both England Saxons and Scotland A and is playing regularly in the Celtic League," said Italy coach Nick Mallett.
