Munster will be without Peter Stringer for their trip to Italy on the weekend after the scrum-half was called into the Ireland squad ahead of the game against France on Sunday.

His Munster team-mate Tomas O’Leary has been struggling with a back injury in recent days and Stringer has been included in the Six Nations squad as precautionary cover.

O'Leary was named to start against France but has had limited training time this week due to the injury and with the symptoms not improving Declan Kidney has called up Stringer.

"Tomas has had a stiff back which has not sufficiently improved over the course of the week, so we felt it was prudent to call Peter up to remain with the squad,” said Ireland team manager Paul McNaughton.

"Tomas is not ruled out of the game, but we will wait and see how he progresses over the next 48 hours before making any decisions on changes to the matchday 22.”

Munster will look to extend their league at the top of the Magners League table when they face Benetton Treviso on Sunday.
