Frans Viljoen recieved his first taste of Aironi rugby this morning, as he arrived in Italy ready to start his new adventure with the Italian franchise in the RaboDirect Pro12.
The South African flanker finished his fifth Super Rugby season with the Cheetahs a few weeks ago.
“It’s a big challenge for me. I say thank-you to the club to give me the opportunity. I’ll do my best and it’s a very nice challenging time for me and I can bring a lot of experience to the club and make the things going better and better”, said Viljoen.
As well as particpating in five Super Rugby seasons, Viljoen's experience comes from his first stint in Europe during the 2006-2007 season when he came to Paris to help Stade Francais win the Top 14. Viljeon also played in the Currie Cup with the Leopards, Griquas and Free State Cheetahs.
“It’s true, this could really help me. Now it’s nice to be fine again after an injury. My first aim is to give everything to this club and being successful here. I just think I must try to help the team, give my experience, my physicality and do all my best, and hopefully it would be a very good experience”.
Viljoen will train with his new teammates on Monday, when Aironi restart the training camp.
Also to begin their training on Monday is South African fly-half Naas Oliver, another former Cheetahs player: “It’s always nice to have someone from your country. It will help, it’s nice”.
