Aironi prop Fabio Staibano has called on his side to follow up their first RaboDirect PRO12 win of the season over Edinburgh with another success away to last year’s runners up Leinster.
Last Saturday the Italians notched only their second win since joining the league last year as South African fly-half Naas Olivier bagged a full house in a 25-19 win over the Gunners.
And while that wasn’t quite enough to drag Rowland Phillips’ side off the bottom of the league, Staibano, who has nine Azzurri caps to his name, insists a first-ever away win against the European Champions is not beyond Aironi.
He said: “We’ve been working hard on our defence because even against Edinburgh on Saturday it wasn’t perfect.
“If we believe in ourselves we can have a really good game. And win, why not?
“Since the first game against the Scarlets we have found our form. It’s now been three games in a row where we have played well and have been giving good balls to the three-quarters.
“We need to continue like that, the pack is there. And when our internationals return we will be even more competitive.”
But while Staibano accepts the loss of ten players to the World Cup has hit Aironi’s early season form, the 28-year-old still expects his side to compete with the Dublin side.
“For Saturday I’m confident,” he added. “Last year, also without our internationals, we showed we could win.
“I think this year the squad is more tight-knit and more complete compared to last year.”
