Aironi prop Matias Aguero insists the set-piece battle will go a long way to deciding the victors of Saturday’s RaboDirect PRO12 clash with Cardiff Blues.

The Italian outfit picked up their first win of the season in their last home game, downing Edinburgh 25-19, and a second at home would already represent an improvement on last year’s league return.

And Aguero, who has won 17 caps for Italy, is confident if Rowland Phillips’ side concentrate on their own game they can hand the Blues a fourth defeat in as many games.

He said: “Like in every game we have already played we know this will be incredibly difficult.

“But with a strong scrum any team can win. If you know how to get your team on the front foot and how to give the three-quarters quality ball, that is the key to success.

“Against Edinburgh it was like that for most of the game and we have to do the same again against Cardiff.

“We have a young squad which is growing quickly, there are so many players who are showing they are good enough for this competition.

“We just need to keep working and thinking about our own game. We mustn’t think about the opposition, just about ourselves.”
