Newport Gwent Dragons’ RaboDirect PRO12 derby clash against Cardiff Blues was called off after torrential rain made the Rodney Parade pitch unplayable.

The Welsh derby match was originally scheduled for a 7pm kick off but having delayed the decision until 8pm referee Nigel Owens felt he had no choice but to cancel the game with too much standing water remaining in the in-goal areas.

There was little the Dragons staff could have done to prevent the match falling victim to the weather as South Wales witnessed heavy downpours before kick-off.

It will come as a particular disappointment to the Dragons who were opening their new £4m Bisley stand and had a full house waiting patiently to attend the East Wales derby.

The date for the rearranged fixtue will be announced in due course.
