RaboDirect PRO12 clubs will be on red alert to a potential new signing with former Glasgow Warriors utility back Rory Lamont looking for a new club following his sudden departure from Toulon.

The 29-year-old joined the ambitious Top 14 outfit from Sale Sharks in 2009, but his contract, due to expire at the end of the season, was abruptly cancelled by mutual consent on Saturday.

Scotland international Lamont scored 95 points in 54 Warriors appearances before moving on in 2008, but it is believed he could return north of the border to link up with his former club or Edinburgh.

Lamont admits he needs regular rugby if he is to catch the eye of Scotland manager Andy Robinson, after a frustrating period at the Stade Mayol where first-team opportunities became increasingly limited.

“I want to play for Scotland and I have to find a club where I can play more rugby – and I promise it will not be in France,” Lamont said on his Twitter site.

“Thank you to everyone at Toulon for an amazing time. I am sad to be leaving but the possibility of playing has been limited this season.”

Both Lamont and his agent – the former Scotland winger Shaun Longstaff – refused to comment on Toulon’s club chief Bernard Laporte’s accusations that Lamont had been released because of his reluctance to mix with team-mates.

Longstaff said: “There is no comment to be made at the moment.”

With 26 Scotland cap, Lamont only appeared once for Scotland during the World Cup – in a 15-6 victory over Georgia.
