Glasgow Warriors today paid tribute to the "magnificent response" from supporters which saw a club record sell-out home crowd attend the 1872 Cup derby against Edinburgh Rugby at Firhill on New Year’s Day.

The gathering of 8,852 was the biggest ever for a Warriors home match, beating the 8,830 recorded for the same fixture two years ago.

Glasgow claimed the 1872 Cup, that marks one of the oldest sporting rivalries in the world, for the fourth time in five seasons, and extended their club-record unbeaten run in the RaboDirect PRO12 to eight games in the process.

Warriors managing director, Nathan Bombrys, told “On behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to offer sincere thanks and appreciation to the fans who come along to Firhill and made the 1872 Cup derby such a special occasion.

“The atmosphere inside the stadium was absolutely tremendous and I know from speaking to the players that it gave them a massive lift.

“Attracting a sell-out crowd underlines the appetite and passion for rugby that exists in Glasgow and the west of Scotland. With the move to Scotstoun Stadium on the horizon, and a healthy number of signings and re-signings already secured, 2012 promises to be a truly exciting year for the Warriors and we want to take our people with us.

“Since taking on my new role just over a month ago, I’ve been blown away by the goodwill and enthusiasm that the public in the west have for the Warriors right now. On and off the pitch, we’re determined to keep giving our supporters a team and club to be proud of.”

Glasgow fans don’t have long to wait for their next taste of top-end fare, reigning Heineken Cup champions Leinster due at Firhill on Sunday 15 January for a crunch Pool 3 battle.

With the Warriors still pursuing knock-out European rugby, the game promises to be one of the biggest ever matches staged on Glaswegian soil.

As a thank you for their dedication, Warriors season ticket holders can bring a friend or family member to the game for FREE, using Voucher A from their season ticket book.

Tickets for the match are now on sale via, by calling 0844 800 3490, or in person at the Greaves Sports and Sauchiehall Street branches of Greaves Sports, our official retail partner.

Adult tickets purchased in advance offer a £5 saving on the match-day price of £20. Students/senior citizens £10, under-18s £5.
