Ford hoping to emulate White’s captaincy

Edinburgh hooker Ross Ford has revealed he intends to lead in the same manner as former Glasgow forward Jason White when he captains Scotland for the first time against England.

Ford made his Scotland debut back in 2004 in Australia when White, who now plays his club rugby with Clermont, was the national skipper.

The front rower has been handed his chance to lead Scotland when he wins his 54th cap as the Six Nations get under way after some fine form in the RaboDirect PRO12 and the Heineken Cup, coupled with an injury Kelly Brown, who was Andy Robinson’s first choice as captain.

And while Ford admits that perhaps a few years ago he’d have been a reluctant leader, he’s now relishing the responsibility.

“When I first entered the Scotland dressing-room the captain was Jason White and he is a very good example of how I’d like to perform in the role,” said Ford.

“When I speak it will hopefully be saying things that make an impact. I will just be trying to lead by example. There is a lot of experience around me and during the game I’ll chat with the half backs, for example and see how they think things are going.”

If you had asked me two or three years ago if I’d be happy to take on the Scotland captaincy Id have been apprehensive. Now, I’m, at the stage where I feel very comfortable about doing it and confident that what I’ve got to say can help the group.

“It is about understanding the game through different experiences and bringing that to the table. A couple of years ago I maybe wasn’t as rounded a player so now I am better placed to do this job well.”
