New Treviso flanker Dean Budd admits he has a habit of hanging onto the coat tails of a backline but insists he’ll adapt to any style he’s asked to at the Stadio di Monigo.

New Zealander Budd has arrived in Northern Italy from the NEC Green Rockets in Japan citing the want to test himself in the RaboDirect PRO12 as a primary factor behind the switch.

The 25-year-old has also represented Northland in New Zealand’s NPC as well the Auckland Blues in Super Rugby.

And in Treviso Budd believes he’s found a European club with the perfect balance between attacking rugby and hard-nosed efficiency.

“I like to pop up amongst the backs, perhaps too much, but I like to run with the ball in hand,” said Budd.

“I’m proud of my ability in the air and in the structured phases of play therefore the lineout is a strength of mine.

“I do like to play quickly and keep the ball alive with quick recycling of the ball.

“My preferred position is blindside flanker but also I am completely happy to adapt to any request, from No. 8 to second row.

“In the southern hemisphere we’re not that familiar with European rugby but from what I do know the RaboDirect PRO12 and the Heineken Cup are two very big competitions and it will certainly be interesting to test myself in them.

“I came to Treviso because I like the way they play and to be able to compete in a championship of a very high level.”
