Fresh from collecting an Olympic silver medal with Great Britain’s sevens team in Rio, Scarlets flanker James Davies insists he cannot wait to get back to work with his club side in the Guinness PRO12.
The 25-year-old will return to Wayne Pivac’s ranks a hero having been part of the side that beat sevens powerhouses New Zealand and South Africa en route to the final match in Brazil, where they were then outclassed by gold medallists Fiji.
Davies made 15 Guinness PRO12 appearances for Scarlets last term, scoring six tries, and while he is preparing to take a short break, his attention is already on returning to league action.
And after impressing in Rio the back-rower is desperate to keep the momentum going with Scarlets and press his case for more international honours this season.
“I’m coming home on 17 August and then I’ve got three weeks off before returning to the Scarlets,” Davies said.
“I’m looking forward to having a bit of a break, but then it will be back into the 15-a-side game with the Scarlets.
“I’m contracted or another two years, so there is no chance of playing any more sevens rugby at the moment.
“I thoroughly enjoyed playing with Team GB, but now my dreams switch back to trying to play for Wales in the Six Nations or World Cup.
“I’ve always dreamed of reaching the pinnacle of the 15-a-side game and I can’t wait to get back into it and start scrapping with the likes of Sam Warburton, Nic Cudd and Justin Tipuric for a place in the Welsh team.
“There was a chance, I guess, of going to New Zealand this summer, but I wouldn’t have swapped the Olympic experience with anything.
“The last ten weeks we have been together have been amazing and I have made friends for life – it has been a very special journey that we all embraced so much.
“I will take things from my experiences in Rio back with me to the Scarlets and use them to try to win a Welsh cap.”
