Leo Cullen admits Leinster have work to do before they are up to full speed as they had to battle to an opening Guinness PRO12 victory over Treviso.

Young fly-half Joey Carbery enjoyed a dream first start, scoring two first-half tries in the 20-8 success.

But it took a score from replacement hooker James Tracy in the closing stages to finally see off the Italian challenge after Marco Fuser had got Treviso back into it.

And despite narrowly failing to get a bonus point with the final play of the game, Leinster boss Cullen was pleased to get off the mark with a win.

“We’re happy to get a win,” he said.

“I thought we started the game really well, showed some good intensity. We lost our way.

“The game got very disjointed; there was a lot of scrums collapsed. A lot of scrum penalties. We came out the wrong side of most of them so it was a little bit frustrating, the middle part of the game.

“I thought we kicked into gear again towards the end of the game but we got a win, we’re up and running. We feel we left a few opportunities out there but listen, we’ve a win and we’ll move on to next week.”

The game also marked the return of Ireland prop Cian Healy, back after five months out with neck and head injuries.

And Cullen was pleased to have his loosehead back, even if he admits the team was still a little rusty.

“He was blowing a bit!” Cullen said of Healy. “It was a good test, good to get some minutes under his belt.

“It’s good to get those guys integrated again. I thought Treviso looked a bit more match-hardened; they played three games in pre-season whereas we’ve been a little bit more disjointed perhaps.”
