Depth of squad is paying dividends for Tandy

Head coach Steve Tandy believes the Ospreys’ strong start to the new Guinness PRO12 season is due to the improved depth in the squad.

The Ospreys scored seven tries in their 46-24 victory over Cardiff Blues at Liberty Stadium on Friday night and have four wins from their opening six games.

The squad was severely hit by injuries last season meaning plenty of young Ospreys talent were given game time and though the four-time Guinness PRO12 champions struggled to eighth place, their new depth is paying dividends.

Fly-half Sam Davies started ahead of Wales No.10 Dan Biggar at the weekend to illustrate his improvement over recent years.

The Ospreys European campaign starts on Friday when they welcome Newcastle Falcons, with Tandy confident they have the squad to challenge on two fronts.

“I think this is probably the most depth we have had during my time at head coach,” he said.

“There was a bit of pain for us last season, and believe me it hurt me, but we have had some benefits out of the injury problems we had last season.

“You look through our squad and there are now a lot of young guys with the experience to step up and do what is required of them because the opportunities they were given mean they know the level that is required.

“Guys like Rory Thornton, Dafydd Howells and Sam Davies have really benefited from that game time. Sam Davies had a difficult start to last season but you look at how he has blossomed.

“That has helped us make a good start to the season and we certainly want to keep that momentum going.”
