Erasmus impressed by Ulster’s class following defeat

Munster’s director of rugby Rassie Erasmus admitted he was blown away by the generosity of Ulster’s players and staff after the dramatic conclusion of their match last night.

Ulster, who went into the game atop the Guinness PRO12, had led 14-0 as the teams approached half-time following converted scores by Charles Piutau and Rob Lyttle.

Tries by Rory Scannell and Jaco Taute pulled Munster within two points though and following a few missed efforts at goal by Ian Keatley, Scannell stepped up in the 75th minute to slot a superb drop goal to secure the victory.

Ulster were understandably frustrated but that didn’t stop director of rugby Les Kiss and his men entering the opposition dressing room afterwards with crates of beer and protein shakes in hand to toast Munster’s legendary head coach Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley, who passed away suddenly two weeks ago – this coming after a plaque in honour of the former Ireland international was erected in the away dressing room at Kingspan Stadium earlier this week.

“From last week with the funeral, Les Kiss was down, [Ulster captain] Rory Best was there, the supporters wanted to help up,” Erasmus said.

“I have so much respect for Irish people from the last two weeks. I always had respect for them, but I just couldn’t believe the way they stand for each other here.

“From before the game, to after the game, it’s always tough when you lose a game. But they came in there with a few protein shakes and beers afterwards into our team room and offered them to the guys.

“That takes special men to do that, so they obviously have a great spirit here. It’s not for nothing that they were leaders of the log.

“It’s humbling to know this, because it doesn’t really happen in professional rugby anymore with guys coming over to your changing room to share a beer with you. It was nice.”
