PRO12 Rugby Chairman Gerald Davies has offered his congratulations to the 21 players from the Guinness PRO12 Championship who were selected to the British & Irish Lions squad.
Davies was a potent force when the Lions won their only Test Series against New Zealand in 1971, playing in all four Tests while scoring three tries against the All Blacks. As Chairman of PRO12 Rugby he is immensely proud of the selections that represent seven clubs from the Guinness PRO12.
“For the players from the Guinness PRO12 who have been selected to tour New Zealand with the British & Irish Lions this summer it is a day to stand tall and cherish the pride of their achievement,” Davies said.
“It is an enormous privilege to be associated with the Lions and behind each name on the squad list are coaches, families, partners, supporters, clubs and volunteers who will share in the great joy of this day. It is truly the coming together of these islands’ nations as one.

“The Guinness PRO12 revolves around positive play and the qualities of invention, creativity and daring – traits historically associated with the Lions. These players epitomise the adventure and ambition that we hold very dearly in our Championship and they will need to rely on every piece of rugby wit that they have when they step off the plane in New Zealand.
“Even for a team as prestigious and full of heritage as the Lions, New Zealand remains one of the toughest countries in which to tour. Our players should be commended for their selections, but they will know that the greatest challenges still lie ahead of them.
“They will meet these challenges head on while representing the history, culture and tradition of four countries, their own clubs and their families. These chosen few will now embrace the spirit of one ambition as they commit to their new team-mates and I have no doubt that this will provide them with ultimate source of motivation. Ahead of this exciting tour I would like to wish the players and the coaching staff all of the luck in the world,” Davies said.
