Dragons Felled B Y Warriors

The great Glasgow revival continued in thrilling style at Hughenden as the challenge of the Dragons was clinically snuffed out.

Hugh Campbell’s Warriors secured a bonus point to give them the vital Celtic League boost in the race for Scotland’s second Heineken Cup place next season.

The opening sparring session was a case of two interceptions – with former Springboks hero Percy Montgomery featuring in both.

After just three minutes, his floated pass was plucked out of the air by alert home stand-off Dan Parks, who cruised in under the crossbar to give himself a simple conversion.

The Warriors kept up the pressure and had further tilts at the line from Graeme Morrison and Glenn Metcalfe.

But then it was Gwent’s turn to benefit from a turnover as scrum-half Gareth Baber made the break. He was halted by Rory Kerr – but was able to give the scoring pass to Montgomery.

Glasgow were soon back on top and they stunned the Welshmen with two more excellent tries.

First, Dragons stand-off Lee Jarvis watched in dismay as his clearance was charged down, with flanker Donny MacFadyen pouncing for the vital touch.

Then Kerr caught the defence on the hop with a sprint out of his 22 zone. He chipped ahead for Parks – who returned the pass for Kerr to reach the target.

Parks confidently completed both conversions to give his side a well-merited 16-point cushion.

The frantic action continued with Montgomery clawing back three points with a penalty – but Kerr dashed in to complete his try double to make sure of the bonus point.

Montgomery responded with two more penalties to keep the Dragons in the hunt, only for scrum-half Sam Pinder to grab touchdown number five for Glasgow, goaled by Parks.

Montgomery traded penalties with Parks before the latter converted a 77th-minute try to make sure for the Warriors – and there was still time for Dave Millard to complete the rout.
