The strong wind dictated the tactics and Connacht had first use of it at Athlone’s Dubary Park. But while the veteran Irish No 10 Eric Elwood kept his side on the move with the wind, he crucially missed with two first-half penalty attempts.
That meant there was still no score at the break and the large crowd had to wait until the 67th minute before the deadlock was broken. Before then O’Gara had missed with a sitter from close to the posts, but he made no mistake at the second attempt after referee Alain Rolland had punished the home side for going over the top at a ruck.
Victory moved Munster into seventh place in the Celtic League, while Connacht had to be content with a bonus point.
