Ulster restricted the home side to a solitary Ronan O’Gara drop goal in the first half as they built a 3-20 lead after Andrew Trimble followed up a Bryn Cunningham chip ahead to score on 14 minutes and Tommy Bowe crashed over on the half hour mark.
But disciplinary toubles threatened to unravel all Ulster’s good work when first Australian lock Justin Harrison and then Isaac Boss were sent to the sin bin either side of the break.
The visitors managed to hold Munster out until after returning to full strength when on 62 minutes Jerry Flannery showed good strength to score and, just four minutes later, David Wallace set up a grandstand finish with Munster’s second try.
Ronan O’Gara converted both tries and Munster were within a score of stealing the game and consolidating their place as league leaders but Ulster held out under intense pressure.
A late penalty to the home side saw O’Gara shun the points and go for the line out but handling errors let Ulster off the hook and a long winning series was at an end.
